Finding What You Didn't Lose by John Fox

E-Notes

I probably started writing poetry somewhere in my early twenties. Not for publication, but as a way of expressing what I was feeling. I find that it can help me to express some things far better than trying to write it as prose.

Here are a couple of my poems.

oh rich silence this
to be almost empty of sound
all save a faint distant
chorus of frogs
still singing
in the nearly midnight darkness
rich silence this
where thoughts are free
to roam and gather shape
unstartled
and unhidden
by the noises of the day
rich silence this
and here I sit
like Midas in the midst
of his golden treasure
taking pleasure
in my wealth.

At first
all I wanted to do
was to look at you
just to drink in every
once remembered
line and shape and sense of you
like sips of clear refreshing water
to a memory
thirsty
for you.
